How to Quickly Create a New Card in Trello (N)
Windows: N (with list focused, no card open)
Mac: N
Pressing N while a list has keyboard focus (and no card is currently open) opens a blank card composer directly at the bottom of that list, ready for you to type a title and press Enter to create the card — no clicking the list's own "Add a card" link required.
**Rapid-fire capture**: after creating one card this way, the composer stays open for the next one, letting you type a title, press Enter, type the next title, press Enter, and so on in quick succession. This is meaningfully faster than the mouse-driven equivalent for anyone dumping several tasks into a list at once during a planning session, brainstorm, or backlog-grooming pass.
**Getting the right list focused first**: this shortcut acts on whichever list currently has keyboard focus, established either by clicking directly into that list's card area or by using Left/Right arrow-key navigation to move focus between lists before pressing N. Creating a card in the wrong list because focus had drifted somewhere else is a common early mistake — worth a glance at which list shows the active composer before typing.
**N's dual meaning**: this same letter does something different if a card's full detail view happens to already be open — in that context, N instead focuses the comment box on that open card rather than creating a new one. The behavior is entirely dependent on whether a card is currently open, not on any separate mode you need to switch between manually.
**What happens to the new card's position**: a card created this way lands at the bottom of the list by default, below any existing cards — there's no keyboard option to insert it at the top or at a specific position within the list directly from the quick-add flow; repositioning it afterward means dragging it manually or using the card's own menu options.
**Chaining with other quick-add shortcuts**: immediately after creating a card with N, it typically becomes the focused card, meaning you can chain straight into D (set a due date) or Space (assign yourself) without any additional navigation step — a fast three-keystroke sequence (beyond the typed title) that covers creating, scheduling, and claiming a task entirely from the keyboard.
**Alternative methods**: clicking the "Add a card" link at the bottom of any list achieves the identical blank composer, useful if your hands are already on the mouse or if a list doesn't currently have keyboard focus and clicking into it directly is just as fast as arrow-keying over to it first.
**Mistake to avoid**: typing a lengthy card title expecting Trello to support the same rich text or Markdown formatting available in a card's description field is a common miscalibration — the quick-add title field is plain text only, and anything beyond a short task name (detailed notes, checklists, formatting) belongs in the card's description, added after the card exists rather than during this initial fast-capture step.
**Escaping without creating a card**: if you open the composer with N and change your mind, pressing Esc closes it without creating anything, leaving the list exactly as it was before — useful for backing out of an accidental keystroke without needing to create then immediately archive an unwanted blank card.
