How to Use the Rotate Tool in SketchUp (Q)

Pressing Q activates SketchUp's Rotate tool. It rotates a selection around an axis you define by where you place the protractor, which is the part that makes it more capable — and more confusing — than a simple rotate command. **Rotation happens in three clicks, not one drag.** Click once to place the centre of rotation. Click again to set the start of the angle. Click a third time to set the end. Between the second and third clicks SketchUp shows the angle live in the measurement box, and you can type an exact number instead of clicking — type 45 and press Enter and the rotation is exactly 45 degrees. Typing after the operation completes adjusts it, which is the standard SketchUp pattern and applies to every tool with a numeric value. **The protractor's colour tells you which axis you are rotating around**, and reading it is the difference between the tool working and appearing broken. Hover before the first click and the protractor aligns to red, green or blue depending on the face or edge under the cursor, matching SketchUp's axis colours. Getting an unexpected result almost always means the protractor snapped to a different plane than intended. Holding Shift after the protractor shows the plane you want locks it there, which is the reliable fix. **Rotate also copies.** Pressing Ctrl during the operation — Option on macOS — leaves the original in place and rotates a copy. Following that with a typed multiplier creates an array: type `5x` after a rotated copy and you get five copies at that angular spacing, which is how radial patterns such as spokes, bolt circles and stair treads are built. Typing `/5` instead divides the rotation into five equal steps between the original and the copy. **It rotates a selection, so select first.** With nothing selected, the tool does nothing on click. This is worth stating because SketchUp's other transformation tools behave the same way and new users frequently activate a tool, click, and conclude it is not working when the actual problem is an empty selection. **Q sits with the other modification keys.** M moves, S scales, Q rotates, F offsets. Together with the drawing tools — L for line, R for rectangle, C for circle, A for arc — these single letters cover most of what SketchUp does, which is why the application feels fast once they are learned and slow before that. There is no modifier on any of them, so they are genuinely one keystroke. **Rotating a group or component behaves differently from rotating loose geometry.** A group rotates as a unit and keeps its internal axes, while loose faces and edges rotate individually and can distort or merge with surrounding geometry. For anything you intend to rotate more than once, grouping first is the habit that avoids a model quietly falling apart. **The measurement box accepts input after the operation, not only during it.** Complete a rotation by eye, then type a number and press Enter, and SketchUp replaces the rotation with the exact value. This applies to every tool that takes a measurement, and it changes how you work — rough it in with the mouse, then correct it with a number, rather than trying to be precise with the cursor.
